MEET STEVE
Meet Steve: 10 facts about the bloke behind SL Guitar Works. Who's the duck? Fact 9 explains.

Cars came first. Classic car restorer and mechanic. Turns out fixing old engines is good training for fixing everything else.
A neighbour is to blame. When I was a teenager, they inspired me to build my first guitar. No going back after that.
Midlife crisis? Not quite. In my 40s the itch came back, so I grabbed the woodworking tools and built an electric ukulele. Yes, really.
My family said “go for it.” So I started building custom guitars on the side while still working as a mechanic. Busy? Slightly.
I went to buy a guitar and came home with a shop. In spring 2026, my wife popped into a closing-down guitar shop to surprise me with a birthday present. She came back with a guitar and a plan. I took over the premises, and SL Guitar Works was born. Best birthday ever.
Weirdest build so far: a baritone headless guitar. Longer scale, no headstock, zero regrets.
Drinks? Coffee until midday, herbal tea after. Strict workbench rules.
My typical day at home in the workshop: tunes on, carving, sanding, and a steady stream of family interruptions. Wouldn’t swap it for anything.
I have five ducks, and they’re all legends (sort of). Bruce & Bruce (after Bruce Dickinson), Bobby (after Bob Dylan), Ozzy (after, well, you know) and Freddie. The two Bruces are both called Bruce because we genuinely can’t tell them apart. Bruce or Bruce in the pic!
