This year’s Woking Guitar Show was a brilliant opportunity to share my work with real players and boutique guitar enthusiasts. One of the highlights was chatting with Crazed Fandango, who stopped by to check out my SL Guitars and have a proper chat on camera. Instead of just talking specs, he picked up the guitars, played them, and gave honest, thoughtful reactions; exactly the kind of feedback I love to hear.
We started with my Wren, a, Les Paul–style single cut, and straight away he commented on the finish: “That is really remarkable… I hope the camera picks up just how gorgeous that is.” He noticed the flame top, the smooth satin feel of the neck, and the detail in the fretwork. We moved through a few more models; from my Starling with it's P90 pick-ups, to the Merlin with a purpleheart fretboard to a left-handed S-style and my Kestral, a bright green shredder with a fast neck. The Tele-style Starling also got a nod for its light weight and punchy P90s. By the end, he called my Wren, “the best Les Paul style guitar I’ve ever played,” which was a pretty special moment.
We also chatted about what goes into these builds, from the time spent on stainless steel frets to the weight of the guitars. I’ve always preferred a slightly heavier instrument for the tone it delivers, though I know that’s not for everyone. Hearing that kind of feedback from a player like him is what helps me refine each design and make every build a little better than the last.
I left the show feeling energised and grateful. Having someone like Crazed Fandango play my guitars and share his genuine thoughts was a reminder of why I build them in the first place: to be played, to be enjoyed, and to spark that instant connection between player and instrument.
